Gulliver's Travels

We had a great Book Club meeting on Gulliver's Travels. None of us really loved the book, but it was fun to discuss. And it was interesting that we all felt similarly about it. As we talked none of us like the Onion either. It's interesting how alike we all are. Even with how very different our backgrounds are.

We also discussed what our favorite book has been so far in our reading. We all agreed that had it not been so long, we liked Don Quixote best. Funny huh. I never thought I would say that. We have learned a bit about the music and dress during the time periods of our books. (Thanks to Kim.) Our background Baroque music set the stage for our discussion and we really enjoyed getting into the feeling of what life must have been like in England in the early 1700's.

I am so grateful we don't wear clothes like that. They wore a lot of wool! A LOT of wool, like layers of it. It kept them warm in the winter and then in the summer they sweat so much it actually kept them cool. Disgusting!

We are going to read Pride and Prejudice next. We then talked about reading Les Miserables. We have read stuff from Spain and England but we wanted to get a more global look at things and thought we might take a look at France. So we will talk about perhaps reading that one for June.

I wonder if anything good was being written here in America during that time. I will have to look into that. It has been interesting to study the time period from a literary point of view. Of course there is a lot of conjecture on our parts. But we have some interesting discussions and a lot of good fun.
